“How do we know she isn’t lying?” We hear that question often, and it’s important to address. The reality is that children rarely lie about abuse. If a child has the courage to disclose abuse to you, the most important thing you can do is believe them and get them help, starting with a call to the child abuse hotline: 1-800-25-ABUSE.
For kids who have been abused, talking about the experience can be painful. ChicagoCAC and our fellow child advocacy centers were founded to minimize that trauma and to preserve evidence so a child doesn’t have to tell and retell what happened to them. From our welcoming building, to our friendly and compassionate staff members, to the nature of our partnerships with law enforcement and child protection teams, we make it easier for kids to come forward and begin healing faster and more fully.
More than 95% of the children who come through our doors know their abuser personally – he or she is a family member, friend, babysitter, coach, teacher or other trusted adult or youth. As adults, …
Beyond our mission and vision, ChicagoCAC has core values that represent our commitment to our clients, our staff and our community. First and foremost, we believe that freedom from abuse and exploitation is a basic human right. Learn more about what we believe and what it means for families who need us.
We are now accepting applications for fall internships in our family advocacy, social work, prevention and other departments, as well as a psychology externship and a post-doctoral fellow. In addition to helping children and families heal from sexual abuse, interns at ChicagoCAC receive professional supervision and are able to participate in clinical trainings.
Last year, we served more families than ever before – and we expect to see even more in 2016. Help us be here for the children who need us by making a donation today! Remember, your donations help ensure that all of our services are free of charge to every client, every time.
ChicagoCAC’s next free Responding to Abuse training will be Tuesday, January 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the center. As our signature training, Responding to Abuse equips professionals, caregivers and other adults to identify child sexual abuse and take action. The training covers definitions of abuse, warning signs, behaviors to watch out for, the impacts of trauma and how ChicagoCAC helps children and families.
