ChicagoCAC has a trained facility dog, a golden retriever named Mac.
He comforts and supports children during forensic interviews, therapy sessions, and other times where they might need extra reassurance. Plus, he does the same for our staff!
Mac was trained for his therapeutic role by Duo Dogs of St. Louis, and he arrived at ChicagoCAC in 2018 when he was just two years old. Once he joined us, he trained with his handlers, forensic interviewers and staff volunteers for several months prior to assuming his ChicagoCAC official duties.
In 2019, Mac began participating in forensic interviews (FIs) as a companion and comfort to the children being interviewed. Every week, Mac continues to provide support in forensic interviews, therapy sessions, and during waiting times for families. Â .
When Mac isn’t busy with his very important work, he likes chasing balls, getting belly rubs, and hanging out with all of his adoring fans among our staff. He loves to be petted and to keep people company, which is what makes him a great addition to our team. At the end of the day, he goes home with his human mom, child life manager Annie Drehkoff. One of our favorite days at ChicagoCAC is Mac’s October 24th birthday, where he gets a song, a party, and a dog-friendly treat.
Prior to your visit, you can let ChicagoCAC staff know if you are interested in Mac’s support. Mac’s availability varies each day, but if possible, he would love to meet you and your family.
