Executive Director Char Rivette was one of several expert panelists on child abuse based on a discussion of the movie Precious at WVON-AM’s 18th Annual Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration at the UIC Forum on Saturday, December 12.
Precious, which is currently in theatres nationwide, is about a teen from Harlem who has been sexually abused and impregnated by her father, and who is physically, sexually and verbally abused by her mother.
Rivette was joined on the panel by abuse survivor and former CCAC Family Advocate LaToya Stallworth. LaToya went on to get her MSW at Jane Addams School of Social Work at UIC and is now a Case Manager and Counselor for Catholic Charities in Lombard. Other panelists incuded Dr. Dorothy Thomas (Loretto Hospital); Dr. George Smith (psychologist, Management Planning Institute); and Dr. Carl Bell (psychiatrist, Community Mental Health Council and University of Illinois at Chicago). Dr. Carol Adams, CEO of the DuSable Museum of African-American History and former director of the Illinois Department of Human Services served as moderator.
